The battery-backed SRAM that holds internal saves is replaced with an FRAM chip, which keeps saves with no battery, so the coin cell can come out. Two pins are lifted and tied down (or to switches for extra banks), then the memory is formatted. A larger 32KB chip with a patched BIOS gives about 512 save blocks instead of 125.
