The tech replaces the stock 8-10GB IDE hard drive with a larger HDD or an SSD on an IDE adapter, formats it, and locks it to the console's EEPROM key. Drives over about 137GB need an LBA48-capable BIOS or dashboard, so in practice this goes with a softmod or hardmod. The same job replaces a dead stock drive.
